Osaka – The Buzzing Hub of Japan.

Japan’s second city has long been famed for its foodie and nightlife scenes, but with a burgeoning art crowd and the opening of Japan’s highest twin tower development, this livable city is worth a visit on its own merit.

Historically, Osaka was the capital of Japan. Today that title belongs to Tokyo – but Osaka remains the second-largest Japanese city. When you’re not marveling at the cherry blossoms surrounding Osaka Castle, or wandering the gardens of the centuries-old Sumiyoshi Taisha, it’s easy to lose yourself in more modern pursuits, from shopping in Shinsaibashi to clubbing in Namba.

And that’s not forgetting Dotonbori, the heart of Osaka, which has enough flashing neon signs to rival Times Square or Piccadilly Circus. The city is a buzzing hub for creatives, nightlife, and foodies alike!

The Country’s Food Capital

Osaka is a destination for food lovers. It’s called the kitchen of the nation, where the local attitude to dining is summed up by the concept of guidance which means ‘to eat oneself bankrupt’.

Needless to say, people in Osaka appreciate a good meal and you’ll be spoilt for choice. Hole-in-the-wall street joints, in particular, are an essential part of the Osaka experience. You shouldn’t leave without trying the takoyaki (balls of flour filled with octopus) or okonomiyaki (a savory pancake filled with veggies and meat) from one of the many street stalls.

Relax in Mino Park

If the urge takes you to get out of the city center, Mino Park is a great green space to unwind. Located half an hour’s drive away from the city, it’s the perfect spot for hiking and walking, with winding trails and a waterfall to explore. It’s best enjoyed if you visit in autumn.

Wander Osaka Castle

The city’s most famous landmark, built by the regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583. Although the castle you see today is a rebuilt version (from 1928), it crowns an elegant, 106-hectare park complex with a plum garden, a Grove of Remembrance and – weirdly – a tree stump that commemorates where a monk took off his habit. There are trees of all kinds in the park, including cherry that flower in spring.

Umeda Sky Building

Touted as ‘the triumphal arch of the future’ this skyscraper has a few outdoor walkways and observation decks where you can enjoy the views of the city, as well as the ‘floating gardens’ it plays host to. It’s a distinctly Japanese, modern building and fun for a little visit.

My Favorite Spot – Dotombori

Instagrammable Dotombori is recognizable by its neon signs in boiled-sweet colors. It’s zingy at any time of day (and busy with boats charging up and down the Dotombori River) with a carnival atmosphere and tasty street food.

Day Trip to Nara

Well known for its roaming deers, the ancient capital of Japan is a wonderful place to visit, filled with history, nature and fresh air aplenty. Nara is relatively small and can be explored easily on foot, but bike rental is possible if you’re short on time. With a great combination of shrines, temples, parks, and amazing views, it makes for a stress-free wandering experience.
